Celebrating America’s Waterfalls
In 2023, the U.S. Postal Service issued a stunning set of 12 Forever Stamps honoring the beauty and diversity of waterfalls across the United States. Each stamp showcases a striking photograph of a waterfall, identified by name and state, capturing both the grandeur and serenity of these natural wonders.

Fittingly, the issue debuted at Yellowstone National Park — home to one of the featured waterfalls — highlighting the connection between America’s protected landscapes and the awe-inspiring power of water in motion.

The United States boasts more than 17,000 documented waterfalls, ranging from delicate cascades to thundering cataracts. Some, like Sunbeam Falls, are quiet treasures tucked away in remote settings, while iconic sites like Niagara Falls attract visitors from around the world. Waterfalls vary not only in height, width, and flow, but also in seasonality: some are perennial landmarks, while vernal or ephemeral falls appear only in spring, fed by snowmelt or seasonal rains.

As geologist Oscar von Engeln observed in 1942, waterfall sites “attract and hold the public’s interest” — and for good reason. Whether powerful or peaceful, these natural spectacles invite us to pause, reconnect with nature, and find moments of calm and wonder in an ever-changing world.
