To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of 20 Forever Stamps in 2023. Each stamp features a striking photograph from Joel Sartore’s renowned Photo Ark project, showcasing endangered animals with the word “Endangered” and the common name of each species.
The First Day of Issue ceremony took place in Wall, South Dakota.
Enacted in 1973, the Endangered Species Act has been instrumental in protecting imperiled species and the ecosystems on which they depend. Over the decades, it has contributed significantly to the recovery of numerous plant and animal populations. Joel Sartore’s Photo Ark initiative aligns with this mission, creating a powerful visual record aimed at inspiring preservation and awareness for species at risk.
