This stamp commemorates Earth Day, an annual event dedicated to environmental protection and global sustainability. The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970, when 20 million Americans rallied for environmental reform following growing concerns over pollution and disasters such as the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill.

Led by Senator Gaylord Nelson, the movement united citizens from all walks of life, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and landmark environmental legislation by the end of that year. In 1990, Earth Day expanded internationally, with 200 million people in 141 countries participating. Today, more than two billion people around the world observe Earth Day annually, advocating for the health of our planet and a sustainable future for generations to come.
