This stamp was issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX, a landmark civil rights law that transformed education and athletics by prohibiting gender discrimination in federally funded programs. Designed by artist Melinda Beck, the stamp features a dark-blue silhouette of a female runner framed by yellow laurel branches — a timeless symbol of victory and achievement.

The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC, honoring the profound impact of Title IX since its passage as part of the Education Amendments of 1972.

The Title IX stamp set includes four dynamic designs, each highlighting female athletes accompanied by laurel branches, celebrating fair competition and the opportunities created for generations of talented women in sports.

This particular stamp also reflects the extraordinary career of Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee, who competed in track and field at UCLA and went on to become one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history. She earned a silver medal in the heptathlon at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, narrowly missing gold by just five points, then went on to claim multiple Olympic gold medals in both the long jump and heptathlon. Named by Sports Illustrated as the greatest female athlete of the 20th century, Joyner-Kersee embodies the spirit of what women can achieve when given equal opportunities to compete.
