2017 Uncle Sam’s Hat Additional Ounce Postage Stamps

On February 18, 2017, in Mesa, Arizona, the U.S. Postal Service issued the Uncle Sam’s Hat additional-ounce rate stamp (nondenominated, priced at 21 cents) in a single design. This issue celebrates one of America’s most iconic patriotic symbols.

The stamp showcases eight stylized top hats in Uncle Sam’s signature design: red and white vertical stripes above a blue band with a white star and a gray brim. Beneath each hat is an oval face shape in varying skin tones, representing the ethnic and racial diversity of the United States.

Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp. The inscription “ADDITIONAL OUNCE” indicates its usage value. Like a Forever stamp, it will always be valid for the rate printed on it.
